Century Plant Flirtation

Original painting. Century Plant Flirtation, 12 x 24 inches, Acrylic on Wood, Copyright 2016 Mary Rae Rush/Mary Gravelle. Framed in a copper wood frame. Varnished with an oil varnish, GamVar.

Painted on location at Bell Rock Pathway, Sedona, AZ

The century plant flirts with the landscape during its final life act of blooming. At the end of the bloom, its life will end. This is its last fling, you might say. Sad, you say? Maybe so, but, oh what joy and fun it has during its last days. And what joy it brings to anyone who might be so lucky as to see it. I was lucky enough to be able to paint it!

Visiting the Bell Rock Pathway, I happened upon three century plants. I chose a place to paint and came back three different times to complete this painting. A photographer happened by and gifted me with photographs of my painting process and scene around me.
